I want to make sure I don’t post falsely. My bad! Insiders tell me it has been 5 transmissions blown. Can anyone else validate this?

Spyglass-You don’t have to die before coming back as a volunteer. If you want to have your say, join a fire or ems company. Nothing is done in a vacuum. All funds that are spent are done in a public forum. Quit bashing the volunteer system. These companies are doing something that if you truly had to pay for it, would cost more than what you currently pay for.
Do you see what is happening in other counties where the fire and ems companies are paid companies? They are shutting down stations and are increasing response times to the detriment of the citizens. Do you really think that’s in the best interest of anyone? Do you want someone to respond to your home when you call 911?
If you don’t like how the county is spending the funds, go to a meeting, speak your mind there. Quit hiding behind a blog.

Except for some of the information in Hocker’s rambling diatribe about the Cobb Island VFD (which was really a smoke screen to provide cover for his NIMBY tantrum over the pier), the vast majority of the information in this thread isn’t even close to accurate. You folks are pitiful.

I wonder how long it will take for some of the members of CIVFD to start using this pier for the mooring of their POB’s (Privately Owned Boats), to save on mooring fee’s at other various locations.

They won’t as the pier, at least at that location, is a dead issue. Hocker won out much to the chagrin of the vollys on the island, particularily Bowling.

sharonrock - 22 October 2009 07:20 AM If the donations are to improve service or provide specific equipment, then I don’t really have an issue—as I stated with the Jaycees/CCSO example, this happens quite often. But, you’ll notice that the Sheriff’s Office isn’t out there fundraising or soliciting donations on their own—the Jaycees is. The donations from the Jaycees or other agencies aren’t general donations, they’re for a specific purpose for the benefit or the entire department or the County in general. If a fire company has a need for additional equipment, that can’t be budgeted in the short-term, then these types of organizations around the County can fundraise, purchase and donate that equipment to that fire company.
sharonrock
They (Volunteer FD’s) could raise a million dollars each in donations and it wouldn’t make a difference in the way some of the departments in the county function, they can have all the money they want, but what good is that money if you don’t have the membership in the station to get the apparatus out the door in an acceptable time frame to maybe save someone’s life, or property.
The same theory goes towards the equipment, you can have the most up to date high tech firefighting equipment on your apparatus, but if you have no one on that piece of apparatus to use it, what good is it.
I also shake my head at the “We have to outdo the Jones” way of thinking of some of these departments when it comes to the apparatus they purchase, it has to be bigger, have more lights, more chrome and shinier wheels than the company up or down the roads apparatus, when will they learn “Chrome” doesn’t put the fire out, and please don’t somebody here tell me that it’s pride in our department, because like they say “That dog don’t hunt anymore”.
I wish the citizens of Charles County could get their own committee(s) together to go to a BoFR meeting in the future and really put their feet to the fire with pertinent questions on how the fire service operates in Charles County, how our monies are spent, and make them answer to us on how our “Fire Tax” is used, why are they giving $400K to an established FD in the county, what is station xy yz or whatever they call them and why is there so much money in those accounts, and that we “The Citizens” want more say on how our tax money is spent on fire/ems protection here in the county.

4eyes, Their decision to build this so called Taj Mahal will come back to haunt both the residence of CI, and those who live off the island, but still rely and depend on them for protection, both for medical and fire protection and safety.
All I can say is this, I just hope there is no lost of “Life or Property” that can/will be attributed to them (CIVFD), failing to respond due to high water, or the bridge not being able to used for whatever reason.

Guess our “Fire Tax” will go into either repairing or replacing those two vessels from 10th District V.F.D., I for one believe no type of monies other than monies they receive through fund drives or contributions should go into repairing or replacing these two vessels.
Let’s face it fellow “Tax Paying Citizens”, when this company sinks two (2) vessels in two weeks, something is definitely wrong, and why should we foot the bill to repair them, for all I know, it will probably happen again.

I was offended last week when I received a request for funds from the Cobb Island Volunteer Fire Department. Let’s get this straight………..first they build a four million dollar building on an island that floods. This spring someone’s goons ripped out the new “High Water” signs that the state installed this winter. In its whining request for funds and attack on the commissioners, paid for with your tax dollars, the CIVFD suggested that the delays for the department was because of special interests. No one had special interests but the CIVFD! They wanted to build this Taj Mahal on an island that flooded all winter. They quickly built the building on land they did not own so they wouldn’t be forced to build it elsewhere. In their haste to get the building completed fast, the department lost sight of architectural and engineering issues and now has an estimated $40,000-$60,000 in damage to their roof because of the winter snows. Rumor has it that the numskull that bought the insurance for the new fire house didn’t realize that the insurance didn’t cover acts of God! I wonder if the insurance agent was a relative of a department member. Is this something we all have to pay for as well? All that with rumors that now include that they have finally figured out that their $375,000 aluminum Boat 6, on salt water, is now a piece of crap. After numerous blown transmissions in Boat 6, it is rumored they now are going to be asking for more of your tax dollars to buy a new boat, a new pier, and repair their roof. Can you say Capital Clubhouse? Has anyone made a count of how many boats there are in Charles County, paid for by your tax dollars? I have and now it becomes a trivia question for you. Feel free to chime in below. And don’t forget to add the St. Mary’s and Colonial Beach boats that routinely smoke the CIVFD response record and patrol the same waterways. I for one won’t give them a dime since this group is nothing but a house full of good ole boys that love spending your tax dollars and other people’s money. Will the new commissioners finally have the gumption to do something about these groups wasting our money?

New commissioners? If we keep electing Chuckites were just going to get more of the same wonderful results we have enjoyed the past few years. As to CIVFD = 1500cc brains, protruding suborbital ridges, in-bred, knuckle dragging, mouth breathers. True professionals, one and all.

I have been waiting to hear how many emergency boats we have in Charles County. Someone must know. There are at least two that came up recently in the Indy. In addition to the USS Never Used we need another $400,000 boat to supplement its lack of use.

Remember the definition of a boat…………A hole in the water that you keep throwing money in! Sounds like boats, the Volunteer system, and our county have a lot in common.
I’m all for safety on the water, but when is it too much?

I was just wondering if either the CCSO, or the Emergency Service’s vessel were out on the Potomac assisting in the search for the person missing from the incident last night.
If not, does anyone know why, seeing that that the CCSO’s Mobile Command post is there, I was just wondering why these county assets aren’t there assisting also?

That entire search was yet again another shining example of gross incompetence.
