Really? I bet you’re a great neighbor. That’s the problem these days. People like you look the other way and refuse to help the police. Pat yourself on the back their buddy. You beat up on Sheriff Coffey when it’s people like you who are contributing to the problems.

Wow, I must of hit a nerve here, from your post it sounds like maybe you’re the one who thought up this lame idea.
What’s so unusual about Sheriff Coffey needing help from neighbors when it comes to watching out for crime? This isn’t exactly a new idea. UNTIL the commissioners can pony up enough money to install a police presence on every block or in front of every house in CC, citizens should take some responsibility for being aware of what’s going on in their front and/or back yards. Basically a no-brainer to remind folks to be on the look-out for anything out of the ordinary; heck, it’s self-preservation.
When it comes time to report crime in our neighborhood, its it up to each and everyone of us to pick up the pone and call the problem in. They will address the situation and dispatch the officers needed. The police cannnot be in your area 100% of the time, it is up to each and everyone of us to call and report what we see as strange.. dont pass the blame or under staffing to anyone, just pick up the phone and call.. we will all live in a safer enviorment if you do that instead of just sounding off here

I think any citizen in Charles County with the slightest glimmer of any kind of morals or ethics would call the police if he or she saw someone breaking-in to their neighbor’s home or property.
All these flyers do is tell the bad guys out there that crime in Charles County is out of control, and the CCSO can’t handle it.
As a retired LEO I have to put my 2 cents into this thread, I would never want my agency to do anything to assist or inform the criminal element that there is a problem with crime in the area, and we needed help.
By distributing this flyer to the citizens of Charles County that the CCSO needs their help, they have just told everyone including the bad guys they’re overwhelmed and cannot adequately fight crime.
I would also like to know if this flyers went to a targeted area in the County, or if they were distributed County wide.
Like I said, it’s just my 2 cents, but I thinkit was a mistake.

Well I guess we are fortunate that you are “retired”. That is certainly an old fashion way of doing things. Today, people demand open government. You have to take the good with the bad. Yes when you inform good people that as Sheriff Coffey has put it “the scum of the earth is among us”, the scum will here the message too.
It sounds like you and coyote are former commissioners. Don’t inform the citizens about anything and things will be just fine. That is the way Fred Davis used to run things too.

Coyote, Before you try your best to scare the good citizens of Charles County by saying crime is out of control, please kindly provide facts to back up your comments. The Maryland Independent recently reported that the most recent crime numbers show crime “flat” in their words. Do you have some additional information that our government is not providing us so we can be informed citizens?
Well, it looks like the “Sheriff” has finally come to the realization that crime in our County is out of control.
The CCSO is handing out yellow flyers telling everyone to be “Nosy Neighbor’s”, because they can’t handle the Crime in our neighborhoods.
What a joke!!!!!!!
You wouldn’t happen to have a copy of this flyer would you? Just curious what content it actually has on it. I’ll try and get a copy of one, too.
I am, however, going to take whatever analytical view you have of our polices’ tactics and Sheriff Coffey’s performance with a grain of salt due to the fact that you placed quotation marks around the word ‘Sheriff’ in an attempt to ironically or sarcastically imply that our Sheriff, isn’t.
The actual crime numbers and crime statistics (two totally different things, by the way) in Charles County during the last four years strongly disagree with your assessment that crime “is out of control.” I read the newspaper, watch the news, talk with police officers and keep abreast of what is going on in our County and nothing has changed to make me believe that crime has changed dramatically in the last few months. There are, of course, the natural swings (increases and decreases) statistically in certain types of crime. Currently, burglary numbers have begun to increase. In an effort to curb these crimes and solve the ones that have already occurred, the Sheriff’s Office is notifying the community—particularly those communities that have seen the increase in burglaries—that 1.) some burglaries are occurring; 2.) what steps to make your home less of a target; 3.) what to do if you see something suspicious in your neighborhood; and, 4.) ask for the communities’ support in solving these, and any other, crimes. I see this as a proactive policing action.

I disagree that is what these flyers do. In this day and age, most neighbors don’t really know each other. Most communities aren’t really “communities” by the traditional definition. Unless its brought to people’s attention, neighbors may not think suspicious activity in their community is all that suspicious, if they are unaware that burglaries are taking place they can easily justify or explain the same activity with a perfectly innocent rationalization. ‘Break-ins’ don’t always look like someone “breaking-in.” They can look like repair services, moving services, delivery services, utility workers or other normally un-suspicious behavior. Making citizens aware of what’s going on in their neighborhoods decreases the likelihood that they’ll make the self rationalizations for an innocent explanation and question certain activities more—notifying the police more. Knowing that your neighbor may normally be at work, or maybe on vacation, during hours or days that a one of these vehicles or persons are at, around or in their homes could be a good reason to notify police. Not every criminal dresses in all black, wears a ski mask and uses a screwdriver to pry open a back window in the dead of night.
If the criminals are aware that these flyers are being passed out, I don’t see this as them seeing they are getting away with these crimes and that the police can’t handle it. Just the opposite, actually. They see that not only do the police know of their crimes, they know what geographic areas these crimes are taking place and they’re targeting policing efforts in these areas on these types of crimes AND notifying residents to be on the look out for them also.
I kept waiting for the DD to post the LTE about the Police Oversight Board wanted by the NAACP.
Since this post timing was similar to the LTE- I suspect a linkage of the 2.
Both are suspicious of the Sheriffs Dept and its practices.
I think many of the problems are a problem is perception and prior prejudices brought forward to this County from their prior home.
Many think a Sheriff office and officers are the same as Police as in PG and other areas. The police chief and officers are hired and under the jurisdiction of the mayors or councilmen.
Our sheriff is elected and if things were so wrong- he wouldnt have been elected a second term. The force is under staffed- and yet do a remarkable job.
I do not think it is up to citizens to over see the Sheriff. If the citizen think their is impropriety in a Deputy or Sheriff action they can take their concerns to Tony Covington and his office to investiagate and bring before a grand jury if they felt it needed.

Yeah Bill, The “Flyer” Sheriff Coffey is having his Deputy’s handout, reporting “Our Neighborhoods Are In Trouble”.

If this is in fact the language on the flyer, couldn’t it just be language to grab the attention of those the flyers are being passed out to? This language could also lead readers to want to take action to help. Choosing less sensationalizing verbiage could lead to people disregarding the notice altogether.
And, so far none of that implies that crime is out of control or that CCSO cannot handle it, as you previously stated.
Coyote, I also previously asked if you had a copy of flyer. You seem to imply that you do. Could you scan it, or take a photo of it and share with the rest of us?
Seems like there’s nothing on there to indicate police cannot handle it. Merely sharing the fact that CCSO has seen an increase in burglaries, what to do to prevent them, what to do if you see certain kinds of behavior, what you can do to help CCSO solve, prevent and stop these crimes AND the CCSO is making arrests in these crimes.
The flyer itself implies the CCSO can’t handle the crime in Charles county, if they could, they wouldn’t have to ask the citizens of our county to get involved.
Let’s see what happens when a citizen who puts his/her nose where it doesn’t belong, and gets harassed, hurt, or worse killed, because the other person didn’t like them being a “Nosey Neighbor”.

Coyote, Does that quote sound familar? It should, because it is an earlier post of yours. Your problem is personal. No matter was the Coffey administration does, you will have a problem with it. Quack, why don’t you conduct a poll to see if the majority of people think the flyer suggests CCSO can’t handle the crime, or if they are just doing the right thing by informing the public.
I myself think the poster is a positive method of crime prevention. The sheriff and his officers can only handle so much at any given time. The criminals have this to their advantage, they also have to their advantage of the “Gangsta Mentality” beaten in to our younger citizens its wrong to snitch…NO MORE SNITCHEN.
When the young population grows up thinking telling or “snitching” to a crime is wrong, then it’s just a matter of time before anarchy truly takes over our county “South East Chuck County”
This is no more than a effort by our good sheriff to try to keep the citizens of this county involved and to only report anything that seems suspicious. It’s not condoning citizen’s arrest, or citizens confronting would be criminals…. Stop being so negative all the time.
Sherriff, you can count of RR to make that call, heck I’ve made dozens of them in the past and I’m still here, and I know for a fact a couple of my calls have ended with a few of our unscrupulous citizens leaving in handcuffs.
After living in Charles County until last year, burglaries were up at an alarming rate.
We had a bunch of criminals in a white van, stealing property out of homes until we chased the crooks in a car and called the police. Getting a license plate is always helpful.
To the credit of the CCSO, they had several cruisers chase and apprehend the scumbags.
Yeah, that flyer the CCSO handed out door-to-door has really done a lot of good, the only thing it has done is tell the bad guy’s the CCSO is in trouble, and the citizen’s have to fin for themselves.
I am waiting to see what comes out next. From what I am hearing from my friends in the department, there is no real plan to address the issue. I am not there so I am not sure whats going on but I am seeing a lot more crime reports talking about stuff like this. Wonder whats next, we still have the summer to go.

Coyote,
You act like a dog in heat. Give it a rest and stop trying to hump the Sheriff. We all get it. You don’t like the Sheriff. Too bad for you that 72% of the citizens voted for him. Looks like you are in the minority.
Scout you are incorrect in your assumptions. There is a plan. Many officers normally assigned to “desk duty” have been redeployed to neighborhoods and there have been several arrests for burglaries. The Sheriff is merely trying to get the community involved by acting as the eyes and reporting suspicious activity. It is all of our responsibilitiy to look out for ourselves and our neighbors.
