Charles County Commissioners do not disappoint...their good buddy, and campaign contributor, Frank Chaney. Rezoning request approved, unanimously. Noteworthy is the fact that Sam Graves "Commissioner for the People" was the first to make the motion to approve. Cooper stated because CSM and Red Cross came out to testify, they couldn't be left out in the cold. Nevermind the hundreds of letters from Hughesville residents opposing and the dozens who spoke at the public hearings. Edith only approved because of the land donations and wanted that a condition of approval - illegal. IMHO, Reuben must be a lousy lawyer since he stated he researched the law extensively to determinie a change in the character of the neighborhood and found this request met the criteria. Fink also mentioned, again, his many "negotiations" with Chaney representatives. I hope everyone remembers this when 2010 gets here. I will do everything I can to see to it not one of them gets re-elected. They do not represent their constituents - it seems they only cut deals for their buddies.The revitalization plan is dead, unless, we win the appeal. Thanks, commissioners, for ruining our quality of life. I have no idea how you can sleep at night. You make me sick.

Changing the treasurers position to an appointed one does nothing but allow the commissioners to abuse another position. "However, I feel that the citizens are best served by leaving the decision in who serves in this Office up to them." Citizens can comment until 4:30 p.m. May 27, after which the record will close, and the commissioners will hold a follow-up work session to decide whether they will pursue the legislation.

Rhee is doing with the D.C. schools. Yeah, I said almost. One important item on her agenda is not so popular -- merit pay for teachers.Rhee is right when she says that the standard way of assessing and compensating teachers is a mess. It drives talented people from the field or leads them to avoid teaching in the first place. It deprives principals of vital tools for improving schools. Rhee learned this the hard way, creating the New Teacher Project to recruit and train teachers for urban schools. Plan to Draft Common Education StandardsBy Maria GlodWashington Post Staff WriterMonday, June 1, 2009Forty-six states and the District of Columbia today will announce an effort to craft a single vision for what children should learn each year from kindergarten through high school graduation, an unprecedented step toward a uniform definition of success in American schools.The push for common reading and math standards marks a turning point in a movement to judge U.S. children using one yardstick that reflects expectations set for students in countries around the world at a time of global competition. Today, each state decides what to teach in third-grade reading, fifth-grade math and every other class. Critics think some set a bar so that students can pass tests but, ultimately, are ill-prepared.Led by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers, the states, including Maryland and Virginia, are aiming to define a framework of content and skills that meet an overarching goal.
