One of the most difficult of all calls for EMS to run is the cardiac arrest/CPR in progress call. Proper care of these very critical patients requires excellent coordination among a large group of providers, and excellent CPR skills. In order to give patients the best possible chance, early and consistent CPR is absolutely essential.
For very long calls, CPR may be given for as long as an hour, depending on the location of the patient, and the transport time to the hospital. Studies have shown, and anyone providing CPR can attest, that it’s very difficult to provide CPR manually for that long a period of time. In fact, studies show that most people can only give a few rounds (two minutes each) of CPR before beginning to tire. This can result in a tired provider giving less-than-adequate CPR. To help solve this problem, and provide the best available care to its patients, LPVRS recently purchased an Autopulse cardiac assist device, using a $10,000 grant received from the United Way, and matching funds provided by the LPVRS Associates.

The Prince George’s County Medical Center in Cheverly is the system’s busiest facility but also leads the system in losses. Health officials have noted that the Bowie facility usually turns a profit and that the Laurel facility is just miles away from massive residential developments expected to come from the Base Realignment and Closure plans that will grow nearby Fort Meade.

It is impossible to ignore the economy - Even with crude oil prices falling another 3.7% last Tuesday to a record $54.95 a barrel. It’s just not good. However, after reviewing just how bad it is, I want to offer some much-needed perspective to the situation.
According to the Labor Department, first time claims for unemployment benefits rose to 576,000, the highest level since the period right after 9/11. Unemployment has risen to 6.1%, a 14-year high. By contrast, unemployment peaked at 6.3% in 2003 after the short recession of 2001. It peaked at 7.8% in the 1990-1992 recession and above 10% in the 1980-1982 recession. During the Great Depression, unemployment was between 25% and 30%.

The events, bankrolled by the state, were held to boost business in Maryland. Their effectiveness, however, was never properly documented.
All together, the Department of Business and Economic Development spent $184,000 on marketing events in recent years that were not “adequately evaluated and documented,” said a state audit. Released Wednesday, the report also said the department paid employees with no job duties, bought airline ticket upgrades without required approval and gave tax breaks to firms without verifying their eligibility.

]]>The Charles County Sheriff’s Office arrested five teens this week in connection with multiple incidents in which the suspects used a BB gun to assault people and vandalize numerous homes and businesses during an overnight spree last week. Calling the arrests significant, Sheriff Rex Coffey said identifying suspects in these types of cases is crucial in preventing other crimes from occurring. “Vandalisms can be difficult to solve because they tend to be random crimes. Our officers pursued every lead until these suspects were identified and apprehended,” said Coffey.
