Active adult living: Ease up on upkeep, enjoy the fun at Heritage

Washington Times, by Michele Lerner

Active adult communities, designed to appeal to households with members age 55 and older, often supply an array of recreational amenities to their residents.

While not all residents are retired, these communities are age-restricted, so the households comprise adults without children. Empty-nesters and older adults choose active adult communities for two main reasons: a desire for a low-maintenance lifestyle with fewer household duties, and a desire for a new community with plenty of social interaction and on-site facilities for exercise and recreation.

  • 1 · Personally if I was a Senior wanting to relocate I certainly wouldn't choose Maryland. I would move to a more tax friendly state.

As for Charles County, I think the seller and/or developer should disclose to all new homebuyers the possibility of future water shortages.

  • 2 · Plus, I thought if someone wants to sell in one of those adult-age-restricted communities, they were allowed to sell to someone with kids. This is nothing more than some developer being able to get around NOT having to pay for or wait for school allocation seats.

  • 5 · Yep - so much for the Commissioners wanting to "preserve" the rural areas!

We all know this development is just the tip of the iceberg - next thing you know they'll put one of those "waterfront villages" in Nanjemoy - one of seven "planned" by the Economic Development Dept throughout the County.

So much for the Comprehensive Plan!

  • 6 · we looked into one these type communities in another state of course- one with lower taxes, no inheretance taxes, lower costs of living, good medical care...you know the drill.

But they are too retrictive I think. Sure as old folk we dont want screaming kids next door all the time or kids trampling thru our yard or the little delincquents tagging our houses....but, You are limited in how long your families can visit. I mean real limited- I can see hwere they dont want your kids or grandkids to move in, but an extended visit? Especially if you live far from them and see them rarely?

It was just too much- and come on, you need to have an interaction of all ages so you dont become all narrow in your viewpoints in life.

Just as the rich living in rich neighborhoods all join the same clubs and associations and intermingle, these places do. And the rich communities, while great at networking and helping form connections, is not that great at expanding your world view; except from a superior position, of course.

Give ma a mixture of everybody- all sizes, shapes and colors and best of all viewpoints- there you have an active and social community.

A man must learn to understand the motives of human beings, their illusions, and their sufferings. einstein
