Award worthy

LTE, Indy

I read that the Charles County Democratic Central Committee is looking for a recipient of their annual Truman Award. The criteria include “one who took action that was/will be considered far ahead of its time. This individual is recognized for making a difference.”

It is for that reason that Ken Robinson should be honored for installing the first (and only) residential wind turbine in Charles County. Though Mr. Robinson has received a lot of publicity including a positive editorial in the March 25, 2009, edition of this newspaper, Charles County has not, to my knowledge, honored this achievement in any way.

  • 1. · This was a very nice letter about Mr Robinson and it is true that he has put his efforts into battling pollution and making us aware of environmental concerns.

His windmill sparked interests into other areas that can be monitored and improved. I applaud that.

What did he post the other day? His windmill had produced $2500 worth of electricity. Just imagine what one large one could do? It could power all of Swan Point and Cobb Island.

  • 2. · Thank you Barbara. As for a larger turbine, we're working on it...seriously.

  • 3. · That would be wonderful and looking towards the future of really going 'green".

Not just paying lip service that we are. Recycling has been a bone of contention for years-
recycling could lower the dunping in the landfill- but that would lower the revenue for tipping fees- so while going through the motions, there has never been a push to really be in the environmental forfront (or even the middle) becuase they want the tipping fees.

Of course in the long picture- the landfill cells will fill quicker and need to be replaced sooner- causing millions of dollars to be spent in closing cells and eventually having to find a whole new landfill.

It is paying for today...without looking to what the future needs will be.

And all this is 20 years behind the curve- even while talking 'green'. They really do not even comprehend what that means.

If it wasn't mandated they would do away with recycling altogether.

Totally agree. That's part of the reason CC goes broke when something like a recession knocks the socks off--we've had very few commissioners who plan for the long term rather than the short term whether you're talking roads or sprawl growth or over-crowded schools or a depleting water supply or environmental degradation.

NOVEMBER! New leaders who are capable of more than pay lip service!

  • 5. · The wind turbines are great for the environment and I like what they do, however, there is a drawback. There is a lot of the "not in my backyard" sentiment that goes along with them. They are just plain ugly.

  • 6. · I think them beautiful- we saw them on the shores of Ireland and on the ridges- they were grateful.
