Bat DIsease Found in Maryland Cave

The Bay Net,

Several dead bats and over two hundred visibly affected bats were found during a survey conducted in an Allegany County cave near Cumberland on March 5. The bats observed during the survey exhibited a white fungus concentrated around the muzzle of the infected bats. The findings are consistent with White-Nose Syndrome (WNS) and if confirmed, this will be Maryland’s first documented occurrence of the disease.

“Many biologists suspect that the WNS fungus, Geomyces destructans, is a non-native pathogen recently introduced to the United States,” said Dana Limpert, DNR Wildlife and Heritage Service ecologist and bat expert. “Fortunately WNS is not known to be harmful to humans. Unfortunately there is no known cure for bats infected with the disease, so our priority is preventing the spread of this deadly syndrome to other bat caves or hibernacula.”

  • 1. · Ooh no raise fees and taxes that will fix it.
Must be "Climate Change" "Global Warming""Global Cooling" or Bush's fault!
Somehow it has to be mans fault and we need to increase cash flows to the state to develop another state agency to investigate.

There's entirely too much crap being transported into our country whether it's Snakeheads or White Nose Bat Fungus or Asian carp in the Great Lakes or zebra mussels that kill native clams or...you name it! We end up having to clean up someone else's "imports." Now, it's bats....damn, bats are good; they eat their weight plus some in mosquitos.

This is why I hardly every see a mosquito!!

Somewhere, not too far from where I live, there's got to be a cave or something. On summer evenings, there are bats everywhere, doing what God put them here to do - EAT INSECTS!

It's so sad that this disease may reduce their numbers, which will only result in increasing numbers of pests!!

Another great reason to "buy American"?

Because China is such a big place and has varied regional climates, a lot of the import stowaways, like the Chinese Mitten Crab and Zebra Mussel, do extremely well over here. They quickly establish themselves, overwhelm the natives, and wreak local havoc.

The list of plant and animal invasives is long and unfortunately growing.

If we are going to continue to rely heavily on foreign imports, we are going to have to deal with the consequences such as lead in paint and the Asian Tiger Mosquito.

  • 5. · Over 300 species of fruit depend on bats for pollination. We can not afford to lose bats.

With an increase in climate change we will lose our food and water supplies as many things are dying in huge numbers like bats, birds(west nile)frogs and other amphibious creatures they are the canaries in the coal mine.

While coral reffs and forest suffer other things like fungus-bacteria-viruses-parasites will thrive.

The mosquitos population will surly go up. mankind will use more pesticides some scientists will call it a mystery to save their job but when you look at the big picture it is easy to see we are witnessing a catastrophic collapse and so far the do nothing approach has not been working.

    everything is connected
