  • 1. · Plus what about the thousands of new homes that will be built?! Talk about traffic?! Figure 2 cars per household X 6,000 houses = 12,000 more cars on the roads!!

  • 2. · I think it did - but not the extension of St.Charles Parkway (golf course) to Rosewick Road. That strip, Piney Church Road and 488 will be developed with thousands of more houses, not to mention the 5,000-6,000 already slated in LaPlata!!

So I ask, where will they get the water? We've already been "warned" (by MGS) that by 2030 there could be significant problems with obtaining water from the aquifers.

Of course, the developers don't care about THAT- they just build & build then move on to their next "victim".

  • 3. · WalMart, Lowe's and Giant are all in the incorporated limits of the Town of LaPlata. WalMart was built many years before there was a sign ordiance. Lowe's and Giant are being built according to the building and sign ordinances now in place.

  • 4. · The bigger question regarding the addition of stores like Lowe's, Target, Giant, etc. has to do with the direction certain parts of the county are taking. If the people of La Plata want the convenience of these stores without having to drive to Waldorf, then they are also saying quite clearly that we as a town are no longer interested in "rural charm". I am not making a judgment one way or the other (of course, I have an opinion but that's not the point). Before we head down the proverbial "slippery slope" toward urban life, however, I want to know why continued growth and development is not put to a referendum so that the people can decide the fate of their town thus ending the speculation that these development issues are being initiated unilaterally by the Commissioners. How can that NOT be the right thing to do? My opinion is that once we set this in motion (and I think we have), La Plata and all the other rural parts of the county slated for "development" will experience the same rise in traffic and crime that Waldorf has over the past 20 years. I have a hard time believing that folks that moved to La Plata 5 or more years ago did so because they were looking forward to traffic congestion and crime.

  • 5. · The "Welcome to LaPlata" signs that are on 301 and on Washington Avenue, and maybe others, are clearly older and obviously outdated. The annexation agreement provided for Fasion, the developer of Rosewick Crossing, to contribute to a new "Welcome to LaPlata" sign which is in the process of being developed.

The older signs in the town do not have to be replaced unless the nature of the business changes and the sign is changed or modified; the name of the business changes and the sign is changed or modified; or a sign has been damaged more than 50% of it's replacement cost at time of damage. Any freestanding sign (those signs usually on a pole and normally closer to the road) existing prior to November, 2003 which lists 3 or more tenants are required to file a master sign plan if during any 3 month period more than 40% of the existing total square footage is changed or modified.

I am on the Design Review Board and we have meetings the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month at 9AM at Town Hall. Anyone wishing to see how the process works is welcome to attend.

  • 6. · I suggest you call Town Hall to find out about where the exact town lines are now. There have been some changes and I wouldn't want to give you any incorrect information.
