Jayne said because the coyote that Dahlstrom killed was a female, “There’s probably an established population” in St. Mary’s County.
Two live coyotes were spotted by a trail cam last year in Valley Lee.

Before the colonization of North America, “coyotes were primarily a plains animal in the Great Plains states,” Jayne said. “The east was largely forested and we had wolves.”
On the East Coast, the wolves were killed off by British colonists and coyotes started moving east from middle America by 1900, Jayne said. They moved to the northeast and down the Atlantic coast and to the southeast and moved up the coast. Maryland and Delaware were the last two states to see coyotes.
“We were between those two movements,” Jayne said.
The first coyote in Maryland was documented in the early 1970s and by 1985, they started showing up as road kill. “They now inhabit all of North America that isn’t covered by ice,” Jayne said.
