Broadband Network Expands in Charles County

The Charles County Commissioners are pleased to announce that Nanjemoy Volunteer Fire Department and Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School are one step closer to being connected to the County’s Institutional high speed fiber optic network. Fiber optic cables for these locations have begun to be laid, as part of the One Maryland Broadband Network (OMBN) State project, which provides access to high-speed Internet broadband services for community institutions (e.g., schools, hospitals, community colleges, etc.) across the State of Maryland.

In Charles County, the project will connect the Nanjemoy Volunteer Fire Department and Mount Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School to the Charles County Government fiber optic network. This will result in much faster Internet service for both locations.

  • 2. · A good start. What about the people who live in that area? Will they have high speed access as well?

This VERY question was posed to Candidate CQK at the Nanjemoy Town Hall. It seems there were some remarks about contracts, or other obligations verizon may have, to providing to the Govt. use only - but NOT to the Citizens. But candidate CQK said she would look into it, so I expect she will.

I guess its really a business decision on Verizons part, of what is profitable - LIKE - NOT having DSL in Nanjemoy unless your are within 3 miles of the switch, which is a technical limitation (near the post office) and this is not in County Government control.

    Laying Fiber is NOT cheap.

  • 4. · I had heard , but this is about a year old...that the cable goes to Govt buildings.

However many very small business's (sometimes 1 person business) will take that line and through installing antennas and more (on present buildings such as barns and more) can provide services to homeowners.

Verizon and the bigger ones usually will not go after the 'low hanging fruit' unless made to through the larger contracts.

  • 5. · If Charles County is looking to attract higher tech businesses and the workforce to go with it, how can we attract these people and businesses to a county not wired for high speed access?

The argument has been made that we build state of the art schools for our students and then send them home to houses where only dial-up connections are available.

Charles County needs to update itself. Verizon is not going to do it.

  • 6. · Expanding broadband would be a good investment for the county, but Verizon does offer pretty solid 3g wireless broadband in most parts of the county . . . that's what I run my 2 person business with.

  • 7. · FiOs has been wonderful!! We trashed the Directv dish and the reception is terrific, not to mention the internet speed!! The only downside is the cost... very expensive with all the bells and whistles including the fastest speed.. confused
