CHP aids Prius with stuck accelerator coast to a stop

Baltimore Sun,

A California Highway Patrol officer helped slow a runaway Toyota Prius from 94 mph to a safe stop on Monday after the car’s accelerator became stuck on a San Diego County freeway, the CHP said.

Prius driver James Sikes called 911 about 1:30 p.m. after accelerating to pass another vehicle on Interstate 8 near La Posta and finding that he could not control his car, the CHP said.

  • 1. · THIS GUY IS TRAVELING AT 90MPH AND USES HIS CELL PHONE TO CALL 911 BECAUSE HE IS NOT SMART ENOUGH TO PUT IT NEUTRAL OR TURN OFF THE IGNITION ? HE SHOULD HAVE CALLED RHONDA SMITH WHO TESTIFIED ON CAPITAL HILL FEB. 23 ,HER LEXUS WENT 6 MILES AT SPEEDS OF 100MPH AND TESTIFIED THAT BRAKING AND SHIFTING THE CAR TO NEUTRAL DIDN'T SLOW THE CAR SO SHE PRAYED TO GOD FOR HELP !AFTER 6 MILES GOD INTERVENED AND SLOWED THE CAR !
    THIS FROM THE ASOCIATED PRESS
    WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE ?

  • 2. · oh, for the love of Pete!

a lot (probably not the braking system) of the subsystems on these cars are drive by wire. as in electronic.

the complaint is that you CANNOT shift into neutral. you CANNOT stop the acceleration. you CANNOT shut the damn things off. if you want to debate whether or not *that's* true, then that's fine. i just wish people would stop with the genius suggestions of shifting the car into neutral.

sheesh, the info is out there, just dig a bit beyond sensationalized swill that's pervasive.
