Commissioner Davis Invites Public to Attend Town Hall Meeting on Feb. 9

Charles County Commissioner Debra M. Davis, Esq. invites the public to attend an upcoming Town Hall Meeting. It will convene on Thursday, February 9, at 7 p.m., at Sartik’s, located on 7670 Hawthorne Road in La Plata.

The purpose of the Town Hall meeting is to take questions from those in attendance, and to discuss any items of importance to the citizens and the community.

All the way at the bottom - you will see she is selling tickets to her fundraiser at the town hall meeting:

  • 1. · The town hall meeting advertisements are paid for by the county because she is acting in her role as county commissioner. I'm going to post a picture of the flyer for her upcoming fundraiser in the extended text to this post. She's violating the ethics policy by selling tickets to her fundraiser at her town hall meeting.

  • 2. · As an attorney, she should know better - not to mix government functions with personal business (which fundraising is)....

  • 3. · Nothing will happen unless someone files an ethics complaint...who's filing it?

  • 4. · True!

Hopefully, now that this is now out in the open, she'll do the right thing and hold a separate fundraiser (different day) using her own money (or campaign funds) to send out fundraising invites and not piggyback it on the Town Hall meeting which is a government function.

  • 5. · I agree with Cheryl. Didn't this same thing happen during the 2010 election season with either Commish Davis or Collins where a fund raiser was mixed in with a town meeting? What was the outcome of that? Whatever it was there's precedent, right? so I hope Commissioner Davis realizes this isn't a good thing and fixes it herself. It doesn't diminish anyone to say I goofed up and take care of an issue sooner rather than letting it drag on.

I would recommend she delay the TOWN HALL meeting till AFTER the Fund Raiser to avoid this conflict and/or the appearance of impropriety.

But like you said, if she does not have sound advice on the matter, she will pay a price in the aftermath. I am quite sure someone will file an ethics complaint on this after the fact if she lets it happen.

  • 8. · --Is Sartik's charging the County government for using its hall for the town hall event?

--Is Sartik's charging Commissioner Davis or her campaign for using its hall for her fundraising event?

  • 9. · I was informed by the Maryland Independent, Commissioner Davis will now, NOT be selling tickets to her campaign fundraiser during her Commissioner Town Hall Meeting. I'm glad to hear an ethics violation was prevented.

  • 10. · This is good - but the question remains:

-- What is the county paying Sartik's for the use of it's facility (for the town hall meeting) AND what is Sartik's charging the Davis Campaign for the use of it's facilitiy (for the Davis fundraiser)?
