County labors to plug hole in budget
With the regional economy hitting a slump and tax revenues heading south, all eyes in La Plata have begun focusing on a single number on the Charles County commissioners’ balance sheet — $54.7 million.
That’s how much money the county will have in its piggy bank once it covers the yawning $18.6 million hole in the current fiscal year 2008 budget.
Tonight, Charles County’s teachers, school board supporters, real estate agents and citizens will get a chance to tell the commissioners how they want to spend that fat, but rapidly dwindling, fund balance.

- 1 · Its a shame all this growth, expanding tax base, sold out the ground water for support and we are still in a hole. Throw these bums out!!!!!!!

I guarentee that if the teachers get more money than there already contracted raise- a union will soon be down rallying COunty employees who keep getting further and further behind.
Remember- POLICE and TEACHERS have Unions, the regular County employees do not. Our competeing Counties all have Unions for COunty and City workers. Maybe if the employees keep getting shafted by this group of Commissioners they will be the ones to cause Unionazation.
I have never before been for a Union, I felt they were not necessary. But in the way these politicans have treated the regular employees in the last 2 years- they will have gotten what they deserve.

I know lots of employees who did not even vote in the past, because they didn't think it mattered. Now I think they know.
The question is:
If a Union Representative came down, would any employees come to the meetings or rallies?
You do need to show up and sign up in numbers for it to be effective.
If I hear back on this blog that yes- people will stand up and be counted, then I will risk it and call.

The Union I belong to is very strong and the benefits I received allowed me to retire @ 46. However; some unions are corrupt, weak, and politically out of touch (We supported Dodd?). Having said all that I am proud to be a union member.
