Donations rile rezoning foes

Maryland Independent, by JAY FRIESS

Four Charles County commissioners took campaign donations as large as $500 from Chaney Enterprises’ owner last year as they were reviewing a controversial zoning change requested by the company for Hughesville.

According to the online Maryland campaign contribution database, Commissioners F. Wayne Cooper (D), Reuben B. Collins II (D), Samuel N. Graves Jr. (D) and Gary V. Hodge (D) have all taken contributions from Frank Chaney since September, when the commissioner board began discussion of the controversial rezoning.

According to Cooper, he has asked the county attorney to wrap up negotiations with Chaney's legal counsel and present a proposal to the board for a vote as soon as possible.

Negotiations? I thought the decision was a yes or no there has either been a change in the character of the neighborhood or a mistake in the original zoning. What the hell are they negotiating?

  • 2. · That's what I was thinking...WHAT is there to "negotiate"?

Are they wrapping up a "deal" of some sort or what?

Although these "donations" are legal, it just gives the APPEARANCE of impropriety, especially in light of the FACT that there's a PENDING decision yet to be made and IF it's in Chaney's favor, it will REALLY look like a quid pro quo.

and present a proposal to the board for a vote as soon as possible
Present a proposal?? A public meeting was already held on the proposed application. The Planning Commission public meeting was held on March 17, 2008. The County Commissioners' public meeting was held on June 25, 2008.

  • 4. · All you have hit it on the nail- I think maybe you all have the potential breakthrough on the backdealings of the Commissioners- Donna Cave- will you file an ethics Complaint? I really think this is just the tip- but the one that may be possible to prove.

And if that all it takes to buy influence- I'll contribute that much- sheesh--you know its not just those amounts- its that and other conciderations Chaney could have made to his friends.

And the quote about not being donations not be a factor in voting- sounds like the same quote Ive heard from other major polititions.
