  • 1. · That ought to be one hell of a summit!!

The members of the new volunteer economic development department will be there...well those that can make it anyway...

The county commissioners will be there...

    Everyone else will be banned!!

$9360 for 15-20 people buys some pretty fancy food!

  • 2. · This is a transfer of the fund balance from the FY10 account titled "Economic Summit." The balance remaining from FY10 Economic Summit was $9,360, this Budget Amendment Increase is to carry that fund balance into FY11 to create a fund for the Fiscal Year 2011 Charles County Economic Summit.

According to the documents attached: FY10 Economic Summit revenue collected was $25,805 and the expenses were $16,444 (leaving this fund balance of $9,360).

I have to admit though, I have no idea what this Economic Summit was or is, or where the "revenue collected" came from.

I think this must be the Economic Summit, held annually, at the Jaycees. I believe the Chamber of Commerce used to host this event, however, in the last couple of years the county commissioners have hosted it. Mostly, business owners or their employee representatives have attended. Not only is their a fee to attend, but, I believe a meal is served, there are guest speakers, and there are sponsorship opportunities in the program for the event and mention during the event.

  • 5. · The Economic Development Summit is indeed an annual event that was co-hosted by the Economic Development Commission and the Chamber of Commerce. The first one was back in 1999 or 2000, I believe. The purpose of the event was to provide the community with an annual report of economic development activity. We also brought in speakers who could offer interesting insights into issues related to economic development.

When the county made the EDC a department of County government, the event became a County government initiative with input from the Chamber. The event continued to focus on Economic Development and was put together by that department with input from and participation by the Commissioners and County Administrator.

Revenue came from 2 sources: sponsorships and attendance. The event has always been held on the 4th Tuesday in October. The first couple of years it was held at CSM, but for a number of years now it has taken place at the Jaycees.
