  • 1 · you all know that I think BRAC has caused a lot of the explosion of growth here.

creates development incentives in the form of State money for public infrastructure

I'm all for this if it is to add capacity to our schools, add overpasses to 301 and increase our water and sewer capacity.

Of it is incentives just to build and develop, forget about it.

  • 2 · My only problem with this is that BRAC is a federal initiative, why is the state of MD using tax dollars to incentivize a federal mandated move program ? or am I missing something here ?

  • 3 · anserman - this is what I was wondering!

What is going on here? It seems to me this is just another way to encourage more intense development,

The politicians and developers are so heavily "invested" with one another that nothing else matters.

  • 4 · this has to do with making the surrounding areally appealling to the military. it shows them how committed and dedicated we, as a community, are in keeping and supporting our military. when the next round of base closures comes around, the hope is, all thismoney spent will prevent 'our bases' from being on the list.

  • 5 · moreover, they also hope, that during the 'realignment' part of brac, the military will see our commitment and will bring more military services to our area. more services includes more defense contractors and other support businesses.

  • 6 · personnally I think they could have gone elsewhere for a lot kless money in zones that needed redevelopment.

I know we are close to DC- but by GOD we are on an isolated pennisula. Seems insane to me.

But it brings in BIG money- and thats where its at.

MD and our County's court these guys, spend our tax dollars to show them how committed we are to having them here.

Because it is about them then bringing in private money to attract Federal Govt money and programs.

  • 7 · Its Congressmans and Senators way of showing clout too.

Bringing in the bacon, gets them reelected.

Having the clout gets them courted by others and granted favors and other types of money.

Thats the big power- having say a Hilary Clinton begging for their support.
