Charles County Commissioners do not disappoint...their good buddy, and campaign contributor, Frank Chaney. Rezoning request approved, unanimously. Noteworthy is the fact that Sam Graves "Commissioner for the People" was the first to make the motion to approve. Cooper stated because CSM and Red Cross came out to testify, they couldn't be left out in the cold. Nevermind the hundreds of letters from Hughesville residents opposing and the dozens who spoke at the public hearings. Edith only approved because of the land donations and wanted that a condition of approval - illegal. IMHO, Reuben must be a lousy lawyer since he stated he researched the law extensively to determinie a change in the character of the neighborhood and found this request met the criteria. Fink also mentioned, again, his many "negotiations" with Chaney representatives. I hope everyone remembers this when 2010 gets here. I will do everything I can to see to it not one of them gets re-elected. They do not represent their constituents - it seems they only cut deals for their buddies.The revitalization plan is dead, unless, we win the appeal. Thanks, commissioners, for ruining our quality of life. I have no idea how you can sleep at night. You make me sick.

I dodged a lot of electronic tomatoes last year for suggesting that President Obama NOT give his back-to-school speech during class time. Many readers thought that was a stupid suggestion. The president and his staff apparently agree with them, because the White House has announced he is going to do it again on Sept. 14. The White House is again encouraging schools to interrupt class so students can listen.I am going to stay away from the political issues. I know this is an election year. Here in the Washington area, including D.C. and the Maryland suburbs where I live, Sept. 14 will be primary election day, with a D.C. mayoral race important to the future of D.C. schools. But I don't think the president's speech will affect that much. That is not why it bothers me.Last year, at least, the speech occurred on or near the first day of school for many students. That day is often a waste anyway, just finding your classrooms, greeting your friends and sizing up your teachers. This year he will be speaking on what is the second week for some students, and for many the third or fourth week, when serious learning should be underway. More Md., Va. students taking ACT for college entrance, data showBy Michael BirnbaumWashington Post Staff WriterThursday, August 19, 2010An increasing number of Maryland and Virginia high school students are taking the ACT college entrance test in a region where the SAT has long been dominant, according to data released Wednesday. In Virginia this year, 22 percent of high school seniors who graduated took the ACT at some point in school, up from 19 percent in 2009, according to the state Department of Education.This year's SAT data have not yet been released. But the percentage of graduating Virginia high school seniors who took the SAT dropped from 73 percent in 2007 to 58 percent in 2009.In Maryland, the number of graduating seniors who took the ACT grew this year, too, to 11,924 from 11,317 in 2009, the Iowa-based ACT organization reported. The number of seniors taking the SAT dropped slightly from 2008 to 2009, but it remains the state's most widely used test. The number of D.C. students taking the ACT has been flat since 2008. 1. · I will wager anyone right now $100 that every single governor of MD has "humbled" himself by having dinner or lunch with a farmer or with a group of farmers, multiple times. This is one of the most ridciulous quotes I have ever heard, but by now we shouldn't be surprised what comes out of Cooper's mouth.I think this goes to how Cooper views both ordinary folks as well as people who hold office--he somehow thinks the latter are royalty and need not rub elbows with the common folk, and the elected official is doing them a favor by doing so. Or, he is so insecure and so in awe he places the higher elected official on an imaginary pedestal.

2. · Photo ops and press coverage - that's all these politicians want - it's all a game to them. And as far as being "humbled" by having lunch in a barn - what a crock!

I guess that means that those of us that have livestock must be humbled several times a day when we go out to the barn to shovel s&*t!

3. · This is really one of the more boneheaded comments I've heard in quite some time. Off the top of my head I can think of two recent Presidents of the United States who actually (gasp!) owned barns while governor of their respective states. I bet they "humbled" themselves every time they went home, both as governor and president.

It's really an offensive attitude Cooper has--this notion that there is an enormous divide between the governor's mansion and the local community, and that the governor is being so incredibly benevolent in bridging that divide. This simultaneously places the governor higher than he deserves and the farming community far, far lower than it deserves. This is an ugly slap in the face of our local farmers. I hope it doesn't go unnoticed by them.
