In a recent letter, a retired Charles County Sheriff’s Office lieutenant blames Sheriff Rex Coffey’s administration for the numerous officers within the office who are counting down the days to retirement.
The author, while correct in his assertion there are numerous officers who wish to leave or retire, is incorrect in his assertion it has anything to do with Sheriff Coffey. In fact, Sheriff Coffey has consistently fought for the concerns of officers and citizens, while the state government and Charles County commissioners cut his budget to the bone.
The blame for the potential future exodus of professional police officers from the ranks of the sheriff’s office lies squarely on the shoulders of former governor Robert Ehrlich, Gov. Martin O’Malley and the current county commissioners.
