Regarding the commissioner candidates forum Aug. 23 at the Jaycees center [”Packed commissioners field goes public at forum,” Maryland Independent, Aug. 25], I have the following comments:
Many of the nonincumbent candidates made statements about the perceived shortfalls of the current commissioners. Included were references to the $6 million swimming pool that is six inches too short; the newspaper clipping from 1985, which warned of future transportation failures if nothing were done to improve U.S. 301; open and transparent government and the violation of the Open Meetings Act (where the commissioners did not open certain meetings to the public); firing of the economic development staff; purchasing the Capital Clubhouse from a company that was struggling (effectively bailing out the company with taxpayer dollars); the fiasco in Cliffton, where residents were not involved in the planning process to place affordable housing in their neighborhood and “throwing Wayne Cooper under the bus” for the decision; the “echo” in that all the commissioners always seem to be in complete agreement; and the recurring sewage overflows in La Plata.
