INDY LTE: Billingsley Road safety issues should be addressed now
With respect to alleviating safety issues on Billingsley Road, studies suggest that the proposed cross-county connector extension could have precisely the opposite effect.
The phenomenon of induced traffic, which can lead to increased vehicle miles traveled in a region when a new highway is introduced, is well established.

- 1. · "Why pick this one road. Lots of roads are dangerous."
Excellent point Birdman!!
If "safety" and "hazardous roads" becomes the new paradigm for "justifying" new 4 lane highways, then we might as well dualize every rural road in Southern Maryland!
I can point to Olivers Shop Road, Durham Church Road, and Route 6 west to Nanjemoy!
Nine times out of ten, it's speed and DUI causing these accidnts - not the road itself unless there's snow & ice, but that affects every road.
But hey, our Çommissioners have brand new SUV's for that!!

He's right...seein' as how the Commissioners, et al think Billingsley is so damn dangerous that it needs to be replaced by the $60 million CCC (bet it's more like $70 million by now, and, if and when it's under contract, cost overuns will push it even higher), why hasn't Billingsley been upgraded with proper signage, rumble strips, etc? Just think of all the deaths and accidents that could have possibly been avoided HAD someone not been so intent on pushing through a 4 lane highway to nowhere? Just goes to show where the priorities lie!
