Larger Walmart on different site proposed in La Plata

Maryland Independent, by NANCY BROMLEY McCONATY

Only a few people spoke during a public hearing last week about the annexation of 14 acres in La Plata to make way for a new Walmart on Rosewick Road.

The La Plata Town Council is considering an annexation agreement with Johel Limited Partnership and Faison Capital Development of Charlotte, N.C., that would allow the developer to build an 180,000-square-foot Walmart on the parcel that is located in the La Plata Crossing complex on Rosewick Road across from the Rosewick Crossing shopping center. The store, which will contain a grocery section, deli, bakery and pharmacy, would replace the 140,000-square-foot Walmart off Drury Drive in La Plata, Faison’s attorney, Thomas Kleine, said during the hearing.

  • 1. · And what will occupy the old walmart building?
Or will they restore it to its wooded origin?
No, they will walk away and leave us another eyesore.

  • 2. · Perhaps the Halloween Store can move in during the season! [Sarcasm intended]

On the other hand, look at all the additional space in which to find more "People of Wal Mart" to photograph!! I used to think that that web site was fake until last week when I saw a "gentleman" wearing a straw cowboy hat, a plaid long sleeved shirt, leather "biker" vest, 1980s style jogging shorts and tube socks and cowboy boots.

My fellow comrades of The People’s Republic of Maryland have spoken. Now, hopefully, someone will make my house payment for me!

  • 3. · Further proof that the leaders in this county have lost their freaking minds. La Plata = Waldorf = La Plata.

    I love this quote:

"There's not a surplus of this type of property along [U.S.] 301 so it will be very desirable."

I guess the La Plata town Council are the only folks in the area who believe there isn't a surplus of big box retailers on 301.

  • 4. · I heard the new Walmart won't have a service center. We have enough grocery stores. I like this Walmart so I can get my oil changed cheaply.

  • 5. · Can you believe that someone actually is against the new WalMart because it will have a grocery store that will undercut the prices of other grocery stores and might put them out of business. I guess that person is on the side of high priced grocery stores and against the population at large. Typical small town thinking. Haven't Ma and Pa stores ripped the public off long enough?

  • 6. · How terrific, another big box store to enhance La Plata. Who would have thought that the tornado would be one of the least damaging things to happen to La Plata?

You want to live somewhere that is "Big Box" proof? Try Hughesville.

  • 8. · Is there a reason Walmart can't expand its current building? The last thing needed is more vacant buildings.

  • 9. · @#8, Same reason Mirant didnt have to take down the old stacks, which are now a useless eyesore. They dont want to pay for the mess they already have before they move on to creating the next mess. and nobody in government, be it chuck co or laplata town, has the political will to make them.
Thus it goes, oxon hill, ft washington, clinton, waldorf, now laplata. bring in the tax dollars, rape the scenery. Progress american style.

  • 10. · I am against another Walmart- TARGET now how groceries with out expanding their Store.

After the OLD SAFEWAY sat vacant for 6 years (?) it has finally been refurbished. SO I guess there isnt another empty storefront of that size on LaPlata anymore- so do we wait another 6 years for an empty Walmart to be filled and another eyesore to built.

Let us admit it- WALMART and its parking areas are not the most pleasant sights to see.

For sure, but why not inact codes that WalMart has to follow if they want to build a new store? They can do a lot to make it blend in with its surroudings with just a good landscaping design.

  • 12. · Seahorse, if the town tries to stand up to walmart it will be like the shell station maybe ten yrs ago, the big corporations cant be bothered with local regulations, and the town cant afford not to take the increased tax revenue, imho...cycle continues.

i actually think they did a pretty good job on the LaPlata Wally World--at least compared to some of the other monstrosities i've seen.

as far as making it blend more ... doesn't Wal-Mart still have a policy where they allow campers/RVs to stay overnight in their lots? i imagine there is a liability issue if you make the lot more palatable aesthetically by giving would-be criminals cover to commit their crimes--trees, bushes, and the like. i don't know, just thinking aloud.

but then again, i don't shop there. so i couldn't care less what they do. but i agree with Barb, kathym24, and others: we don't need more empty buildings. my wife heard there is talk of a movie theater in the old space, but i don't know her source on that.

  • 15. · I agree with xcitor. They did a decent job on the La Plata store when it was built. It's not Wal Mart that is to blame for their stores' conditions. It's the shoppers! They toss their trash down in the parking lot, park their cars all the way across the fire lanes because they are too frakin' lazy to walk the extra 40 feet from a space and they abandon their carts right next to their empty space because they are too lazy to put them in the corral. They employees aren't too hip on cleaning up the joint, either.

You get what you pay for. Wegman's doesn't look like that!

  • 16. · #14 what we need to do to lure Trader Joe's into any space vacated by another retailer.

First you need to up the number of peeps with college degrees or above in CC. A lot of where TJ's puts a store has to do with the education level of the area.

  • 17. · i guess i just don't get the fascination with Trader Joe's. the only thing they have going for them is reasonably priced wine and excellent cheeses. are Maryland-located TJ's even able to get an off-sale liquor license?

outside of that, it's hardly a one-stop grocery store. and from what i've seen, most of the food is just frozen, overly-processed, packaged-someplace-far-away-from-here snack-like foods, with sodium and fat levels that are not very healthy. in short, it's the same crap you can get anywhere.

the stores i've visited have very little in the way of whole grains, dried beans, legumes, etc. and even the fruits and vegetables i've seen there is, on balance, kinda gnarly.

sorry guys, i think we can do better than a Trader Joe's.

more than one growers-only market in Charles County would be a good start. more people willing to support their local farmers with a Community Supported Agriculture subscription would be better.
