I read with interest the comments made recently on her campaign website by Commissioner Edith Patterson that property taxes have not been increased. Then why each year do I pay on average $200 more in property tax than the previous year?
Is that not an increase? There is a complicated answer to this question, and it involves the assessments and homestead caps, but you never hear the explanation.
I attended the budget hearing in May and it was not clear to me that Commissioner Patterson nor any of the current commissioners understood the budget well enough to discuss the taxes.
In fact, as one of the speakers, Rick Campbell, pointed out, the budget documents presented at the hearing were changed one hour prior to the hearing.
Then why each year do I pay on average $200 more in property tax than the previous year?
