Many residents of Hughesville don’t want the company to get the heavy industrial zoning classification it would need for the parcel on Route 231 if it were to move its operation out of Waldorf. They believe the mining operation would hamper revitalization efforts in the village area along old Route 5. Some businesses in the area say they are barely surviving since the Route 5 bypass opened last year. Business owners in the now-quiet downtown area of Hughesville say the Chaney plant would be just what is needed — something to restart economic development there.

Chaney has been a good neighbor to people in Charles County. Its current location in Waldorf proves that heavy industry and commercial and residential development can coexist. There’s no reason to think that wouldn’t be the case in Hughesville. Chaney’s request deserves some consideration.
