Maryland Independent Editorial:  Chaney request deserves consideration

Many residents of Hughesville don’t want the company to get the heavy industrial zoning classification it would need for the parcel on Route 231 if it were to move its operation out of Waldorf. They believe the mining operation would hamper revitalization efforts in the village area along old Route 5. Some businesses in the area say they are barely surviving since the Route 5 bypass opened last year. Business owners in the now-quiet downtown area of Hughesville say the Chaney plant would be just what is needed — something to restart economic development there.
[...]
Chaney has been a good neighbor to people in Charles County. Its current location in Waldorf proves that heavy industry and commercial and residential development can coexist. There’s no reason to think that wouldn’t be the case in Hughesville. Chaney’s request deserves some consideration.

  • 1. · I bet Chaney and the Editor are mutual business friends?

And as such, naturally would not be unbiased in thier opinion.

Take their editorial with a grain of salt.(or gravel?)

  • 2. · I say get the people down in Hughesville and if they don't want Chaney down there, get a damned good DC attorney and fight to keep Chaney out of there.

There is absolutely no reason why a company should be able to run roughshod over the citizens of Hughesville.

Just because every Nepototic, breathing, heartbeating kissing cousin has tolerated them before, it's time to kick them out.

Heck, find a company if Ohio, or WVA, or some other state to come in to mine gravel.

Keep Chaney in Waldorf and let'em stay in Waldorf. If they run out of rocks to play with in Waldorf, send up packin' to inner-city DC.

  • 3. · So tell me, how the heck does a GRAVEL PIT "restart economic development"?

Most of these pits take 20 years or more to finish up, so if some of these business owners are hoping for "economic development", i.e. subdivisions, they'll have to wait a long time.

Gravel pits result in lots of noise, dust and most of all TRAFFIC (lots of broken windshields and ACCIDENTS), and lower property values (although NOT lower assessments or taxes, just lowers the "market value").

As the good people of Hughesville are well aware, it's important to have as many people as possible show up at the Hearing(s)!

  • 4. · I may be wrong here, but it is my understanding (from the article and the editorial) that the pit has already been mined out. Does anyone know how long ago that was? Will a civil war erupt in Hughesville between the business owners and the private residents, which to my simple way of thinking, would only give added leverage to Chaney's position.

  • 5. · Once those Hughesville folks get started, whoever is in their crosshairs better sure as heck clear outta their way!
