Mass filing protest set

GOP hopefuls to meet

Maryland Independent, by MEREDITH SOMERS

It doesn’t matter whether your shade of party loyalty is red, blue or green. For many Charles County residents, frustration with the current board of commissioners is a black and white fact, and Wednesday night kicks off a large-scale effort to make a change.

“We’re hoping people show up because they are tired of the commissioners not responding to them; who are tired of the county budget being mismanaged, taxes going up and decisions being made behind closed doors,” said Nanjemoy resident Rick Campbell, who registered as a Republican county commissioner candidate for District 2 earlier this week.
[...]
In light of the planned public event, Commissioner Reuben B. Collins II (D) said it was unfortunate he hadn’t directly heard from residents about how upset they were with the county government. He said any of the commissioners would be interested in and happy to listen to how to make the county a better a place to live.

You've got to be kidding me! We tell them ALL the time...they don't listen! That's one of the biggest reasons we are SO mad.

  • 5. · Had a couple of speakers and a turnout of about 65 (Mike Phillips counted 75 and joked about counting those that came and went into the Gym above the Board of Elections to get up to the 100!).

Rick Campbell of Nanjemoy, announced his intention to run for D2. Jennifer Abell announced she's considering a run for D1. David Bird announced that he'd like to run for D4, but that its in the hands (and approval) of his employer -- his day job has some potential conflict of interest with him being a County Commissioner. Mike Phillips reiterated his intention on running on the State level, but made sure it was clear that he was concerned about what happens in Charles County, as this is his home. We also heard from Johnnie DeGiorgi, Jay Bala and Donna Cave.

I've got some pictures up on the Photo Gallery. Be sure to check them out.

  • 6. · All parties were present, by a show of hands, about a little more than half Republican, a little less than half Democrat and a couple Independents.

  • 11. · We had 78 pledges signed. The pledge states:

"I pledge to work toward the defeat of all 5 sitting Commissioners.
I will support other candidates of my choice:
    with donations,
    I will volunteer my time,
I will write letters to the editor,
I will attend meetings, hearings and rallies to oppose the inappropriate behavior of the Sitting Commissioners. "

Please stop by my office to sign one. I have boasted that we will have 100 signed by close of business tomorrow.

  • 12. · The best of the protest were the surprise announcements of Jennifer Abell, and David Bird.

Two people pledged to actually file as a protest, too. John Howard and Donna Cave. These were a pleasant surprise as well, and John Howard is actually considering running. He is a democrat from Dist 2.

  • 13. · Kurt, how about sending the pledge to me via email. I'll scan it in and post it here. People can download it, sign it and perhaps fax it to you?

  • 14. · Talked to Kurt. I will be posting the pledge document here and will include a fax number to send the form to Kurt after you have signed it. Let's make sure he gets MORE than 100 pledges!

  • 16. · Pauleen - great quote on Reubens comments. Can I use that?

Airwolf - 78 is a great showing, weather we make goal or not - absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. I will Email a copy of the form out and I will see if beth gilliland will email it to the 500 GOP's on her list and I'll certainly send it to the GOP club membership.

I look forward to seeing the paper, anyone want to meet at the independent tonight around 12 am and get a copy off the press?
