Miller rips slots suit, charges hypocrisy

Maryland Independent, by ALAN BRODY

Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. on Tuesday lashed out at gambling opponents, who filed suit last week to prohibit state elections officials from certifying a ballot question to be presented to Maryland voters Nov. 4.

  • 1. · I take issue with Alan Brody's characterization of those of us who do not care for this piece of legislation. I, for one, am a strong proponent of gambling but this bill, in its current form, is a piece of crap. I urge everyone to read it thoroughly before voting. It's not just a bill that approves slots in Maryland.

Well some kind of funding will be needed to fund the amount of money they are losing from less cigarette tax collections and with all the other crap they put in place for their wish lists with the additional taxes they raised are in jeopardy. Get ready to get hit again in January since our populations of illegals coming into Maryland are increasing to get those free licenses and benefits which we give to anyone including space aliens which I expect many of our Leader's want their vote.

  • 3. · What bugs me about allowing slots is that a private entity is going to be in charge of the show. I'd rather the state of Maryland run slots as they do the Lottery.

  • 4. · That's a double-edged sword, Seahorse. Private business running the gaming would certainly include some less-than-honest dealings, I'm sure, but to put the Maryland gov't. in charge of anything financial makes me a bit queezy! They have yet to demonstrate any fiscal responsibility as far as I'm concerned.

  • 5. · Understand where you're coming from, Birdman, but whether a private entity or the state runs slots, the state will do with their share of the $$$$ what they please despite what they say. Proceeds going toward education? RIIGHHHTTTT!!! (Psst, anyone wanna' buy a bridge in Manhattan?)! The big difference to me, anyway, is that the state would have more money if they choose to keep slots in-house. Get a private gambling company involved, and they've got their foot in Maryland's door. I don't like that. Too many possibilities for graft and corruption (more than what goes on now).

  • 6. · Might want to keep this post of mine for posterity....I predict that if we get slots in MD (and I am for them so the record is clear), no matter who "runs them" private enterprise or the state, we will still be hit with tax raises and irresponsible spending down the line ! It just seems to be in the genes of MD politicians to tax and spend (both parties included) ! One other note, this post is from a registered republican !! grin

  • 7. · No question about it. I don't think you're going out on any limb with this prediction. The record in Maryland is very clear.
