National Institute of Vehicle Dynamics - Drive to Survive

The National Institute of Vehicle Dynamics (NIVD), a Maryland Nonprofit, was founded to address the issues of “driver error” in teen-related driver fatalities, which is the leading cause of teen driver deaths for the age group 15-21 years old.

NIVD’s Drive2Survive® curriculum teaches teen drivers life saving techniques not being addressed in basic Driver’s Education.

Currently, our Drive2Survive® curriculum is the first approved and licensed Advanced Safety and Collision Avoidance Teen Driver Training Program by the Maryland Department of Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA).

NIVD’s curriculum is 8 hours of in-car practical application with a state certified Law Enforcement Emergency Response Operation Instructors. One of the most important subjects being covered, removing “panic” in emergency situations with the proper response to the vehicles controls, through our intensive in-car training program on a closed course driver training facility.

We are asking that parents help our organization partner with local community groups to create more awareness about our life saving program “Drive2Survive®”. Together, we can jointly host each others logo and web link to our home pages to let parents know your organization is concerned about reducing the leading cause of death of 15-21 year old drivers “Driver Error”.

  • 4. · They do have Maryland MVA liscense and approval. This is NOT basic drivers education. It is an optional ADVANCED course and should be taken AFTER completing the required basic drivers education.

  • 7. · Not necessary. I am aware of this program and the MVA does not license any programs. They approve Driving Schools if they meet the criteria but have no provision for "Advanced Driving Schools". This program is not a good program for teen drivers because it teaches advanced driver skills that they are not ready to learn. This program has not been supported by Maryland Highway Safety Office or SHA. End of story!

  • 9. · From NIVD -
What do you mean that the Drive2survive program teaches young drivers skills they are not ready to learn??
Skills such as: how to conduct a proper off road recovery safely, how to recover from front, rear or all wheel skids?
All the mentioned skills are things young and experienced drivers get into behind the wheel and do not often get a second to chance to experience because they die, they have not been given the skills to handle these situations. Our natural instincts behind the wheel in an emergency situation are wrong! WE DO THE OPPOSITE, PANIC AND THEN CRASH! Some survive others become road side memories.
That is why all parents need to enroll there young drivers in a course that offers true to life emergency skills training in a controlled environment with a professional instructor. That’s how we keep our young drivers alive, not by handing them a brochure on how to handle the situation??
Basic driver education is not an advanced skills course. The basic Driver Education is enough training to give you the minimum skills to get their provisional license only. I hope this clears up a few things for you? Thanks for your input…

  • 10. · Sheriff Coffey has partnered with this program and has donated 20 scholarships/seats in the training and is holding an essay contest in the high schools in Charles County to select the winners. I’ll keep you posted as details of the contest are finalized.

  • 11. · Searched and searched MVA website and still can't find Drive2Survive. Are you sure they are on there?

  • 12. · Sheriff Coffey is evidently endorsing this program now too, so I am suppoe to believe that everyone else is wrong and you are right. Okay, whatever.
I'm not doing this dance with you again. I never said it was on their web-site. If you want to talk in person, my cell number is above. If you want a copy of the certificate from MVA, shoot me your fax number. Otherwise, quit complaining.

  • 13. · Be nice! This program got a grant from NHTSA for evaluation but can't get anyone to pay for the program so the evaluation can't be done. There are programs available in the county that have been evaluated and have been proven to reduce the "bad" teen driving behaviors. These programs are provided in the county not Cheltenham....

  • 14. · You're right...I wasn't being nice. Just get tired of hearing complaints sometimes...anyway, that was my evil twin posing as me and using my name smile Yeah! That's the ticket.

Anyway, if you know of other great programs, let's hear about them.

  • 17. · Not evaluated and teaches "advanced" skills new drivers do not need. Program is not approved by MVA, no such thing and he is not endorsed by Maryland Highway Safety Office who is the lead agency on traffic safety initiatives. This program has been around for years, if it is so great where is the evaluation and proof that it makes a difference?

Comment by Notjustme  on  11/20  at  01:26 PM | [Back to Top] | [Back to Main]
  • 18. · I disagree. ALL DRIVERS, including new ones, need ALL the skills and training they can get.

I'm not going to argue the MVA thing with you again. I can fax you the certificate.

Notjustme...i get the impression that maybe you own or work for one of the local driving schools and just don't like this program on stomping ground.

  • 22. · Yes I have heard of false advertising and unfortunately I have heard of people posting anonymously to sabbatoge or ruin others creditability or efforts. Like I told you almost 3 weeks ago, this program has been approved and certified by the MVA. It was not signed today it was signed weeks ago. I will post tonight. I find it very discouraging that only after I state I will be posting the document, you FINALLY acknowledge the MVA approval but try to discredit it by saying it was approved today. Unless you want to reveal yourself to me and discuss, I can only draw one conclusion...you are a fraud with ulterior motives.

  • 23. · Did not say it was approved today. New regulations went into effect today which he may not meet. By the way he is licensed as a driving school shich means that he meets minimum standards for a driving school. There is no certification from MVA. Now go play nice and be done with it!

  • 24. · According to statement #5 above you stated
"5...I talked to MVA they have no license nor approval."
    Then #7
"...I am aware of this program and the MVA does not license any programs. They approve Driving Schools if they meet the criteria but have no provision for "Advanced Driving Schools". "
    Then #17
"...Program is not approved by MVA, no such thing and he is not endorsed by Maryland Highway Safety Office who is the lead agency on traffic safety initiatives. "
Then you assert you are in the know #19
"...I have close contacts with MVA and know the truth! "
    Now #23 you admit
"By the way he is licensed as a driving school shich means that he meets minimum standards for a driving school. "
    but state...
"There is no certification from MVA. "
so are you saying this certificate is falsified? A forged document?

And I believe you are the one that needs to learn to play nice and share the toys. Don't hate a kid if he has a better toy than you.

Currently, our Drive2Survive® curriculum is the first approved and licensed Advanced Safety and Collision Avoidance Teen Driver Training Program by the Maryland Department of Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA).
They are approved and licensed by the MVA, and they are the only approved and licensed driving school to offer an "Advanced Safety and Collision Avoidance Teen Driver Training Program."

All of the driving schools listed as part of the Driver Improvement Program ("a 6-8 hour instructional program that is intended to provide driver rehabilitation," according to the MVA) are not supplementally licensed as DIP approved and licensed schools -- but nearly all advertise themselves as such -- they are merely approved and licensed driving schools that offer the 6-8 hour driver rehabilitation program.

Drive2Survive® is a voluntary course, unlike the DIP which is usually a mandated to be taken by a judge or through other legal action. Drive2Survive® is available for teens/parents who wish to expand their driving skills beyond basic drivers ed course (and the 60 hours behind the wheel required to get a license). When I took drivers ed, all that was taught was the driving test. Very little time was spent on actual 'on-road' driving. We'd be three students in car with an instructor and would go out for several hours, each taking a turn driving. When we'd head back to the school, we'd all be signed off on the total number of hours we were out "learning," not the number of hours behind the wheel. Their philosophy behind that was that you were observing and learning the skills by just being in the car -- if that's the case I had 16+ years already as an observer, "learning," I should have been an expert the first time I got in the driver's seat.

Any driving program that can enhance the fundamental skills that a new driver has, especially ones that can help them drive more defensively and to avoid an accident isn't a waste of time or money. I would think that if everyone were to have to attend a program such as this one there would be less need for the judges to order bad drivers to attend a DIP.
