St. Marys County Awarded Transportation Enhancement Funds for Three Notch Trail
The Board of County Commissioners for St. Marys County is pleased to announce that the County was recently notified by Maryland Governor Martin OMalleys office that $771,000 in Transportation Enhancement Program funding has been awarded to St. Marys County for the Three Notch Trail.
“Developing the Countys railroad right-of-way into a hiking, biking and equestrian trail will provide numerous recreational, tourism and transportation opportunities,” said Francis Jack Russell, President, Board of County Commissioners. “This award will assist the County with approximately 50% of the Phase V construction costs and help us promote the health and recreational benefits of walking, running, biking and other types of exercise.”

Now, that's what I'm talking about. I hope it can be extended into Hughesville and beyond. I think the planned trail terminates at Deborah Drive.

I think that's because the whole right of way used for the 3 notch trail is owned by St. mary's County (including the section in Charles Co). I expect that's why it ends where it does; That's as far as St. Mary's Co. can build it without getting Charles COunty involved and possibly slowing down the development. (Don't have references for this statement, but I think it's stated on the official website)
I also truly hope someone in Hughesville is paying attention to this. If they could figure out how to, say, extend the trail into Hughesville, that means any pleasure bikers on trail might make Hughesville a long stop to look around and maybe spend some money before turning around to come home. I don't expect any sort of built up park or trailhead area at Deborah lane, so if they don't extend it, then there's not much point in riding all the way to the end as it is.
Also, I noted that a few posts back there was a link to a MD Independent article that indicated that 3 Notch Trail might eventually connect with the Indian Head-White Plains Trail. (Not the faintest Idea how).
