State looks at ways to train, retain more teachers

Baltimore Sun, by Liz Bowie

Each year, more Maryland teachers retire or leave the classroom than emerge from the state’s schools of education.

That needs to change, a Maryland task force said in a new report outlining 26 actions that should be taken in the next several years to produce more teachers from state colleges and to provide incentives for teachers to stay in classrooms.

  • 1. · While considering an open-book for choosing the next Superintendent of Schools for Charles County, they ought to look at someone who is going out of the envelope to produce changes that should be employed in Charles County.

    Here's the scoop:

  • 2. · We DO need to look for more ideas-

I saw Palin going agter the school techer vote- MORE MONEY for teachers.

She did say one thing I agree with- the no child act must become more flexible so there can be some creativity in education. (paraphrase there- folks)

  • 3. · Parents of Charles County school children, please consider this: The Charles County Board of Education has been a pawn of the Teachers Union for years. They will puff and pant about ways to improve the education of your children for your consumption but, when push comes to shove, they will always back down to what the Teacher's Union will go along with and what the Commissioners will approve in Administrative Contracts. We have a Superintendent that is grossly overpaid--along with his Assistant Superintendents, even if they were providing leadership that shows progress to an acceptable degree rather than a lack of progress in many areas the pay and benefits far exceed the State norm for other Counties. Charles County needs a new Superintendent of Schools and not just a rubber stamp with added pay and benefits that the Board of Education would love to bestow on him and his Assistants just to get the next contract signed and go home. If you want a democratic process in the selection of the next school administration and leadership that will enhance your kids chances of being accepted in good colleges and universities, then you better start raising some Hell or you will just get more of the same for the next several years.

  • 4. · Thanks Imagination:

I had to pull the grandkids out of public school becuase of the lack of stimulation and the 'labels' they put on kids.

Now as we retire we are paying for private schools. Something I'm mad as hell about.

The way the children were treated by the 'experts" in the public school system is one more thing I'm mad as hell about.

The constant cry of more money, more money- will solve all ills- Is another I'm mad as hell about.

No more money will save the schools- you can pour all you want into the void- like pouring water in a hole in the sand- but it will never be full enough- what we need is good governence-
    and priority spending.

Im mad as hell that my taxpayments go to this system.

If they dont improve- at least let me choose to spend my tax funds for school at a private school.

Hmmm, sounds like a voucher system...better vote Republican!

Personally, all three of my children attended public school in CC and did fine. In fact, one of my kids couldn't get the advanced math that she needed in private school during her middle school years and we had to put the kids in public school! What we need in our schools is more discipline, better enforcement of the rules and tighter academic standards.

  • 6. · Both my kids went to public school and also did fine-
It is just in the last 5-7 years that this stuff has been happening,at least that I am aware of.

ANd yep- vouchers fine with me.

Or maybe we can have schools that teach to these learning styles or the combination (and actually there are more- these are the main ones): visual, auditory, kinesthetic/ manipulative.

Most kids are very strong in one and ok with the rest. They will do ok in any school. Others are mainly the one style- and hey- if it doesnt fit in the neat little round hole of the public school which teaches to the main style- you are up the creek without a paddle.

Remember most of our great discoverers in science and even arts were drop outs or did very poorly in schools- imagine the possibilities if their learning style had been encouraged!
