The Johnnie DeGiorgi Thread

On May 3rd, Mr. DeGiorgi announced his intentions to once again challenge Commissioner Edith Patterson for the District 2 commissioner’s seat.

I’d like to try an experiment here. My thoughts being, let’s use this thread for Duck readers to directly ask Mr. DeGiorgi any questions they may have. Let’s find out where he stands.

As more candidates declare, I’ll extend the same invitation to them. Maybe we can even get some mini-debates going on down the road between the candidates.

Something tells me these threads will be watched closely, so let’s all act respectful. No personal attacks, name calling, etc.

One of these nights I’ll place a permanant link to this thread in the sidebar. And Johnnie, in no way are you limited to this thread. Continue to chirp in anywhere when the urge hits you.

    Employee Internal Issues

Issue 1: Many rights have been taken away .. Alternate Work Schedules, casual Fridays, etc. Where do you stand?

Issue 2: Abuse in the workplace. Charles County has a Zero Tolerence "Violence in the Workplace" Policy and Procedure which is not enforced by anyone. Many Blogs have been posted talking about abuse (mostly verbal or mental abuse) by supervisors. Seems especially rampant in Planning and Growth Management focusing on Beall and Hinchy. What actions would you take?

Issue 3: There have been many blogs on this site about unqualified personnel being promoted to supervisors or manager positions. Especially in the Plannng and Growth Management / Developmental Services. Where non engineers or engineers without appropriate degrees are made supervisors and the real engineers are held back so as not to challenge Beall. What would you do about those issues?

Issue 4: There have been many blogs about the tremendous waste with the contractors in Capital Programs Department and Engineering Inspections Department. "What would you do about these issues?"

    Outside Issues:

Issue 6: Ice Rink, Adams Dance and Gym, Stadium issues all stink to high heaven. What would you do to open the books on these issues?

Issue 7: If you had inside information on certain sensitive issues in the county would you do whatever it took to bring those issue to closure? **** GD What's that secret you are keeping? **** Clap for the Wolfman.

Issue 8: Would you have a open door policy to individuals who wanted to bring real issues without fear of retaliation or would you bring Lip Service as with everyone else?

More later ... these will keep you busy!

  • 2. · Johnnie G,
My question is this - Your opponent is a very powerful women who knows how to play the policial game, what is going to set you apart from her and win this race?
More importantly- what will you do to get right down to the level of the people and respond to the needs?

How will you deal with someone like Wayne cooper who just smiles thru his teeth and blows smoke up our *$%&( as he climbs all over us??

  • 3. · could someone anyone explain how Edith Patterson is a very powerful person? She doesn't have any independent thoughts, she doesn't have support of staff, Seems to me that she doesn't earn her power , rather it is given to her by the public. Someday soon , we need to say enough!

  • 4. · Without stating the obvious- Queen Edith has always enjoyed a very strong following since taking office at the Board of Education & working at the college... women like that & therefore they vote & people of color want to see the board show a diveristy down in this area- so they also vote.
She was never about makning the schools system better, neither was Whiney...
that is why politicians do nothing to improve the quality of public school education. They are terrified of educated voters.

It wouldn't have mattered if they voted in a jackass to that position (oh yeah, they did vote Cooper in- but that's beside the point)- as long as the sex & color was right. smile
Queenie has always played it safe in her votes, that is what makes her a politician...

  • 7. · Gizmot23> As to my opponent being very powerful I haven't thought about it that way. I just view her as a County Commissioner. She has a job that the people have voted her into doing. If she is doing a good job then they will vote her back in and if she's not then I hope I'll get that chance to show.

As to what I am doing. I am meeting and talking to everyone that I can at Walmart and at Safeway and while I am teaching Driver's Ed. In Sept I got 1,451 votes. and for what I didn't do I feel good with that even though I didn't win. But thing time around I decided to start early and get my name out there on the street. I have door signs on my Blazer saying 2010 Vote for DEGIORGI CHARLES COUNTY COMMISSIONER with my web page on it. http://www.votedegiorgi.com I am trying to get my web page out there because being able to sit and read about your Candidate makes it nice. Last time I didn't go DOOR to DOOR knocking this time I will. So there is a lot I didn't do and I hope you all will keep me in mind on voting day.

  • 10. · Thank you Buster Brown, I think what happened was that I tryped about 6 pages and now I'm thinking there is a limit on the size that you can post? Computers drive me up the wall sometimes. So what I will do is answer a couple then submit that and then do a couple more. And why do I have the feeling you have a ton of quetions to ask. If you ask me to many I'm going to try out for the show on FOX "ARE YOU SMARTER THEN A 5TH GRADER">Don't ASK

  • 12. · Work Schedules and Casual Fridays> Good question and one close to my heart. I talked about this last year to some of the County Employees and most told me they loved being on it. I was shocked that the Commissioner's took this away. Bosses need to find ways to make the work place a lot happier and to walk in from the start and do something like that just makes no sense.

But here is my take on this> I worked Civilian for the navy for almost 28 yrs before I retired back on Jan 3rd of 2003. Over 3/4 of my time working for the Navy was on Flex-Time and Compressed worked Schedule. On Compressed work I was off every other Friday and the Friday I worked it was 8 hours and the other days were 9 hour days. And guess what the Navy is still doing it to this day along with a lot of other Goverment places. This is a great way to save leave for the employees and get things they need to get done on that day off or better yet look and see if your Friday or Monday would fall on a Holiday which I did from Jan 1st I would mark my days all the way to Mid Jan of the next up coming year. Oh did I have a lot of 4 day weekends.

So like I said to take this away from Empolees I ask WHY? I am in favor of it and if I won the election in 2010 1st thing I would push for would to have Altenate Work Schedule put back in place.

  • 13. · If you look around it is a benefit to many. Even in the private sector they have this benefit duing the summer months.

Good Answer JDG. You would win a lot of county votes on that issue alone.

  • 14. · I just hope the County Employees get the word that I'm in favor of Compressed work and Flex-Time. I wonder how many in the Duck work for the County?

I said I was retired but I now teach Driver's Ed for Best Driving Acadmey and Mike and Harry the owers are wonderful to work for. I work the hours I want too. As long as I let them know a head of time what I want to work and they can have the kids set and ready for the hours I pick. I talk to a lot of the Teenages as we are driving and most say they are not happy with the way Charles County is doing by cutting all the trees down just to build and build and build. Most tell me they plan to more. I ask them to hang around so they can at least vote for my in 2010. I drive 8 to 10 hours a day around this County and more than any Commissioner thinks about driving so I have 1st hand look at what's going on. I'm going to try and get Jay to go with me on one of my days working and have him in the back sit doing a story. I could point a lot out to him that even he hasn't seen I'm sure.

  • 16. · What is your position about hiring unqualified individuals to fill important County positions? Example a nonengineer hired to manage an engineering section? Since it may be quite illegal for this person to do any engineering whatsoever what actions would you take?is
