November 17th, 2008 was scheduled to be a decision on the fate of the proposed Cross County Connector. As it turns out, the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) has requested another 60 day extension from the Charles County Comissioners.
Essentially this means we get to sit on our hands and wait until January before we get any sort of a decision. I’ll keep posting more information as it comes up.
Thanks to Team Benya for the info.
I was a bit perplexed by most of the comments made by Commissioner Cooper in today’s Indy. Some of those comments have been pointed out already. What really jumped off the page at me was Cooper’s assessment of the Board’s performance at meeting the ’Goals‘ for this calendar year:
Cooper said he believed the commissioners accomplished most of the list they drafted last year.
I went through their ‘Goals’ that were released March 7th of this year, and graded leniently with a ‘Met,’ ‘Partially Met,’ or ‘Not Met’ grading scale. Of 53 goals, I could only answer ‘Met’ for 18 of them, 2 were ‘Partially Met,’ leaving 33 as ‘Not Met.’ While 20 out of 53 hardly seems like they “accomplished most of the” goals on the list, some of those they did meet weren’t really “accomplishments.” I’m referring to goals like, “Conduct an all day retreat with the Commissioners’ cabinet (i.e. County Administrator, Department Heads, County Attorney, etc.);” or “Review performance and financial benchmarks for Civista Hospital. (County Commissioners/Fiscal & Administrative Services);” or “Improve Media Services proactive service to County Commissioners, esdtablish protocols and improve disseminating Commissioner policies. (Chief of Staff).” [these goals were cut & pasted directly from their document—typos and all]
I hope they added to this year’s list to purchase licensed computer word-processing software that has the ability to spell-check—that way they can delete the freeware version of Open Office that has been installed on all the County computers. That should be an easy one to put a check in the ‘Met’ column.
Maybe my pessimistic attitude towards the current Board has me grading them too harshly (I thought I was going easy on ‘em). How does everyone else think they’ve measured up?
The stabbing occurred just before 8 p.m. last night at the Hooters in Waldorf and next door at the Super 8 Motel. Its reported that its the result of an altercation in the parking lot of the Hooters. The victim fled to and collapsed at the Super 8, where he died.

There was another fatal stabbing the night before—A body was found, nude and stabbed, apparently dumped in the parking lot of Lowe’s in Waldorf.

The Calvert County Traffic Safety Council will be enrolling teens in the free Southern Maryland DriveCam program on Thursday, November 13th, at Huntingtown High School in Calvert County from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., during the Calvert County Health Department’s Flu Clinic program.
- The entire program is FREE – free camera, free installation, free service for one year. After that, if parents want to continue service for the enrolled teen or a sibling, it is estimated to be $30.00 a month, and the relationship is entirely with Drivecam at that point.
- No appointment is necessary to complete enrollment paperwork on Thursday, November 13. Cameras will be delivered about a week later.
- Parents and teens both need to be present to complete paperwork, which will take about 15 minutes to complete.

There was an all out, totally out of control brawl in Wakefield this evening. There were upwards of 30 people involved. I watched a teenage girl in the crowd wielding a pipe or a pole, swinging wildly at anyone that got near her. The entire crowd rushed through the Adams Landing townhouse development and ended up on Keepsake Place. As best I can tell, one person was seriously injured and was airlifted out. The word is he was stabbed. At one point we had seven police cars on Wakefield Circle specifically to form a wall and hold back the mob that was trying to rush the helicopter that landed to transport the injured guy.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s grandmother died of cancer, he said in a statement on Monday, a little more than a week after Obama interrupted the White House race to say goodbye to her in Hawaii.
“It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer,” Obama said in a joint statement with his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng. “She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility.”
Dunham helped raise Obama from the age of 10 while his mother was working in Indonesia, and Obama took an emotional 22-hour trip to Hawaii to visit her on October 23 and 24.

when will we know who wins?
There are obviously record numbers of people who cast absentee ballots. In Maryland people waited in line for hours to vote by absentee ballot, but these ballots aren’t going to begin to be counted until Thursday, November 6th. With the polling numbers between McCain and Obama so close, couldn’t a couple thousand (or less) of these absentee votes make the difference between who actually wins in Maryland (and every other state)?
I’m not foreseeing any concession speech to be made next Tuesday… my gut feeling is this is going to stretch out longer and will be messier than the 2000 election. I guess we’ll see.
